Oven Roasted Asparagus

asperagus

Isn't asparagus wonderful this time of year!  It's cheap and glorious and we've been eating a lot of it lately at my home.  I have one wonderful tip for cooking veggies.  It's just about the only way I cook ANY vegetable.  Roasting them in the oven.  Have you tried it yet?  I promise you will love it! I haven't prepared a vegetable this way and not liked it yet.  So here are some suggestions of vegetables to roast.  Well first off, asparagus! ... ...continue reading

Chocolate Creme Brulee

cremebrulee

I have a family FULL of pudding lovers!  They all love the creamy goodness of a homemade pudding, a cream pie, or even a box of Instant Pistachio Jell-o makes them so stinking happy!  I love asking people at Thanksgiving time what kind of a pie family they are?  When I was growing up we NEVER had a cream pie.  EVER!  We loved fruit pies, and pecan pies, pumpkin pie, and lemon meringue, but there was rarely a cream pie at our dessert table.  Maybe ... ...continue reading

My Kids Favorite Morning Juice

juice

My kids drink this juice EVERY. SINGLE. DAY!  It has become a little bit of a ritual at our home in the mornings.  Dad makes the sandwiches for the kids lunches, Emma cooks short order eggs, or Huevos Rancheros, or Cinnamon Toast for the brothers, and I juice the good stuff! Even my picky red headed child loves this juice.  At least I know they've got a good start to their day, and if they don't get smarter at school that day, it is totally not ... ...continue reading

Steel Cut Oats (Jamba Juice Style)

oats

I have always really liked eating oatmeal for breakfast.  I like those little instant packets, quick cooking oats, old fashioned rolled oats, but my absolute favorite is Steel Cut Oats.  Steel Cut Oats is a less refined oatmeal.  It is actually oat groats or the oat kernel or berry, cracked or cut into a smaller size.  You can actually do this to a lot of different grains.  I love to crack wheat berries, or rye, or barley.  In their "whole" ... ...continue reading

Turkey Noodle Soup

clawsonlivesoup

AKA My kids favorite meal on the planet! I am always blown away with the response I get from my family when I make this soup. It's so easy, and takes hardly any thought what so ever, and yet everyone thanks me, and tells me I'm the best cook, the best mom, and the most amazing person on the planet. True story! A big fancy Sunday Turkey Dinner is always one of my favorite meals. As a kid my mom didn't reserve turkey as only a Thanksgiving meal. ... ...continue reading

Mel’s Perfected Yellow Cake (High Altitude Directions)

cake

I had to take one for the team this last week.  I had to test out a lovely Yellow Cake a few times to see what changes needed to be made for high altitude.  We ate cake.  We ate lots of cake actually, but I didn't hear anyone complain.  My friend Mel at Mel's Kitchen Cafe sent me a recipe and directions for a cake she has been perfecting for awhile now.  I believe her family ate 10 times more cake than we did or more!  It was after her 16th ... ...continue reading

Swiss Chard Breakfast Hash

Swiss Chard Breakfast Hash

Doesn't the title sound so romantic?  My neighbor George (so I only have 1 neighbor, but he's a great neighbor!) is going to tease me for eating something like this:)  I've made a few things that I shared on Instagram that were'nt his favorite.  He may have said something like, "OOOooo!", but on the other hand he's the first to tell me when something looks good too.   He's even volunteered his tasting talents a few times.  That's what a good ... ...continue reading

Raspberry Cream Cheese Breakfast Cake

coffeecake

In all reality, this delightful confection is a Coffee Cake.  But since the named implied more than I wanted to explain to my children in their younger years, I followed the idea of a favorite friend, and renamed it BREAKFAST CAKE.  The name Breakfast Cake suggests everything good about this dish.  We eat it at breakfast, and we don't feel guilty about eating cake for breakfast since it is specifically made for this purpose.  (I will tell you ... ...continue reading

Honey Citrus Salad (My Absolute Fave!)

honeycitrussalad

I love this salad!!!  My grandma made it for me a few years ago, and I was thoroughly impressed.  I think I may have licked the bowl.  Since having this salad the first time, I seem to make it for almost every meal now.  I love that citrus are at their prime this time of year.  It's so great that whenever I walk into Walmart during the winter months there are a ton of choices of fun different kinds of oranges.  We go through the Cuties ... ...continue reading

Raspberry Thumbprints

Raspberry Thumbprints

You know when we started the bakery (Great Harvest Bread Co.) 19 years ago this June, we were just kids.  We were playing "Grown Ups", because really, at 22 and 24, you don't have a whole lot of life experiences under your belt.  But we had a new baby, a new bakery, a new college degree, and a new town to call home all within 15 days time.  We gained a lot of experience really quick!  But the greatest moments of owning a bakery are the employees ... ...continue reading
